Wii Fit

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 10:44 pm
location: home, Antioch, CA
mood: blah blah
posted by: [info]rredhead

Max bought a Wii Fit, probably about a month ago.

The Wii Fit will not register Jack, because, even when he's standing relatively still, it tells him he's fidgeting.

My Wii Fit age is 46.

I'm 33. Almost 34.

I couldn't do two of the balance tests, because I couldn't make my left knee bend that way. It really pisses me off, how so few fitness options are available to the disabled. I'm only slightly disabled - there are things my knee just can't do, and things that I can't do because of the meds that make me able to walk. I could swim, I can walk, just not fast, etc. I'm never going to be able to run or do a heavy cardiovascular workout. I can't bike. I can lift weights. It always depressed me when reading Newsweek, that all of the fitness articles focused on getting people who simply didn't move to move more. What about people in wheelchairs, for whatever reason? What about the paralyzed? People with disorders like cerebral palsy, for whom some movements are simply not possible?  Obviously, these people can and do workout - some of them to an incredible extent. But it's more complicated than saying, "While watching TV, get on the treadmill". You know, the guilt-based articles? When I really couldn't walk, I loathed them.

I didn't mean to get on that rant. Mostly, I wanted to note that the Wii fit thinks I'm old.

fundal height

posted by: [info]gregariouspeach in [info]naturalbirth

For you ladies that measure your own fundal height, have you noticed a big difference between your first and second baby?

I am asking because though I am only 10w6d when I have a full bladder (typically first thing in the morning, though I just felt it again and it's midday) I can feel my fundus 3cm below my belly button! I am sure it is my uterus as I only recently was pregnant and had lots of fun feeling for it.

I am concerned that it's so high but is it normal to be so high since I was only pregnant a year ago?

Should I make an appointment for a scan or not worry about it?

Doula

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 10:15 pm
posted by: [info]zechal in [info]naturalbirth

I do want to thank everyone for all of your comments to my previous posts, while I know my decision may not have been the decision made by everyone, it's the decision that my husband and I feel will work best for us. We have started to look for a doula to attend our hospital birth with us and have a meeting set up next week.

We met with our midwife this weekend and spoke to her about our concerns and just that our complete trust in her was shaken. She even suggested looking for a new midwife as she feels trust is obviously a huge part in a stress free environment. She didn't blame the OB and even spoke highly of the ob that I will have, as far as not pushing interventions, etc. She was able to recommend another midwife who serves our area, but we had met with her previously and just didn't click. So, I feel as though we are making the best decision for our family and do plan on having a doula with us for the hospital birth and post partum.

Thank you again for all the comments of support/constructive criticism :)

Purse explosion! Ack!

My purse had a strap failure this weekend at a con. While I can (and will!) repair it, I want to carry more stuff than it will safely hold and need a more durable bag. What I'm looking for is a minuscule messenger bag -- the current purse is 10"x11" and is a pretty good size. I don't want to spend a lot of money because I'm unemployed right now. Both the Eula and the Click from Timbuk2 would work, and I know I would be using them for years to come, but they are a bit pricey for me right now. My searches for messenger bags have yielded typical messenger sized ones -- anyone know where I can get a smaller one?

An Amherst 4th

My boyfriend and I headed out to Amherst for the weekend to stay in his new apartment with his roommates and some other friends that came to visit. It was wonderful!

As you can see, he hasn't moved in yet. He has to live at home for the rest of the summer so he can work, boo. His roommates are working in Amherst, though, so they moved in in June. It's a really nice place! and on friday we (by which i mean my boyf, with me consulting) bought him a mattress, so the next time you see this room (and i'm sure you will) there will be a bed instead of sleeping bags!

Getting a Couch to Not Slide All Over the Damned Place (open letter)

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 06:20 pm
posted by: [info]tempest_omouthy in [info]hip_domestics

Dear Couch,

I love you, I sit on you, I vacuum you no less than 2-3x per week. Why can't you return the admiration by just staying put? I know ideally it would be best to anchor you against a wall so that when we sit on you day in and out or when the dogs jump on you, you wouldn't slide all over the place. But that is not an option. Really, you need to sort of sit out in the open, making invisible room divisions with your back. WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE YOU STAY?!

Much Love,
Tempest O'Mouthy

ETA I had to go out to get some potatoes for dinner anyways, so I picked up some of the little rubber feet sticker things (I should patent that, no?) and so far it's not budging! The real test will be when my gazelle husky bounds over the edge onto it but hooray! THANKS GUYS AND DOLLS!

Independence Day DITL

Is it just me or does DITL day always seem to fall on the fourth of July? I know I've done at least one other 4th of July ditl, when we were in Japan.

This year is less remarkable. A bike ride, a barbecue, a water balloon fight, and of course fireworks.
a pretty traditional Independence Day (with lots and lots of pictures) )

Ice Cream and Avocado?

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 03:43 pm
posted by: [info]fuckingpixie in [info]hip_domestics

I have some vanilla ice cream in the freezer, and I want a treat. I'm really craving some fresh fruit with the ice cream, but don't want to go to the store. I do, however, have a few avocados.

I know Alton Brown has made avocado frosting on food network a few times:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/avocado-buttercream-frosting-recipe/index.html
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/pancake-cake-with-avocado-frosting-recipe/index.html

I'm thinking of making an avocado sauce for my ice cream.

Do you think this would be good?

Would you just add some milk or something to the frosting recipes for a thinner consistency or approach it completely differently?

Thanks!

ETA: I made a shake with vanilla slow-churned ice cream, 1 whole avocado, a few shots of sake and a pinch of sugar. Delicious!

I keep clicking on the IE icon from force of habit but IE8 totally DOES NOT WORK! It hangs when I try to open new tabs so I can comment on LJ posts. I already installed Chrome to use for Blue's LJ but I keep forgetting to use it, and by the time I run into the comment tab hang thing I'm a few pages deep into my FL, and ARGH it makes me stabby.

I need a good stabby icon. The only ones I have are dreamy, melancholy or silly.

If this isn't appropriate, please let me know.

Has anyone ever flown with a 4- to 8-week-old baby? My MIL has set up a baby shower/meet the baby party at her church in Tennessee for Labor Day weekend. Yes, without checking the date with us first. :p

I'm due July 25th, but this is my first, so we have no way of knowing if baby will come late, early, or right on time.

We can drive if we must, but it's a 10-hour drive.

Husband wants 7 week old to cry it out...

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 01:22 pm
posted by: [info]crazykittymomma in [info]attachedparents

Ok, so here's my situation; generally my 7 week old is fine, but occasionally (like, every baby I'm sure) she has super fussy spells where nothing makes her happy (not eating, being changed, changing room temp, holding her, dancing with her, etc).
My husband is impatient and gets frustrated very easily so his response to this is to first loudly tell her to "stop yelling"...um, yeah honey, she's 7 weeks old, she's super logical right now...and then he tells me we should just put her in another room and let her cry since nothing is going to make her stop. Ugh.
So, what can I tell him to help him see that this is wrong? He admits that she isn't trying to manipulate us, but he just doesn't want to listen to her if she's crying for "no reason" (and just for the record, I can't really take her in another room with me, b/c we're living with my parents and her crying would drive them bonkers too...).

Also, when she gets like this he tends to take her away from me and not give her back b/c he's so insistent that he knows what he's doing and that his method (practically yelling at her) is the right way...he doesn't seem to understand the biological response I have when she's crying...any advice?

EDIT: I know he'll be much more comfortable with her when she's older and I do think he's a good dad, he's just being so stubborn about this!

high efficiency detergent

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 10:33 am
posted by: [info]swingsister_t in [info]hip_domestics

I've searched the archives, and don't see this question brought up at all.

My husband and I have bought a house, and bought new front-loading washer/dryers.  In our old place, we had a stacked front-loading unit that's about ten years old. We always used regular detergent, and never had an issue.

The manuals and the detergent tray on this new one states we should be using the HE detergent only. Around here, the HE detergent is more expensive too... We haven't upgraded in a long time, so I'm very confused over this. (We also have half of a bulk size bottle of the regular left... so it's not only curiousity, it's thriftiness.

So - high efficiency detergent, absolutely necessary in a front-loader? Or something new and fancy they want you to buy?
